About That Bold Move…

…the ubiquitous black rectangle is back.

I really wanted to use my little flip phone…

…it fits so nicely in my pocket and has a retro cool look and feel.

But...it has one major shortcoming with which I simply cannot live:

It can't connect via bluetooth to my Xlink device...

...and that's what makes my antique rotary dial phones work.

That, my friends, is a deal breaker.

After a little research I found out why it doesn't work:

TCL flip phones (both 2 and 3) use Bluetooth 4.2, and the Xlink uses version 5.0.

I scouted around a bit and found a Kyocera flip phone that would work with my Xlink, but I'm tired of spending time and money on this.

Especially since my old iPhone SE works with Puretalk; all I had to do was put my PT sim in my iPhone SE...

...and voila:

...back in the saddle.

Flippy gets to stay on as a backup - it's free with my plan - so I've decided to take the L on this one.

Machine, 1 - Resistance, 0.

Just wait 'til next time.

According to our friends that prognosticate the weather...

...we're just a few short days away from Fall.

You recall for meteorologists, seasons begin on the first day of the month in which the astronomical <solstice or equinox> occurs.

Since the Autumnal Equinox happens on September 22nd, Fall begins on September 1st...3 days from now.

Why do we care?

I'm so glad you asked.

In a recent poll (of 9 fingered men who live in Michigan, are owned by 3 cats, and are married to the most beautiful woman in the world), Fall was voted the best season of the year because:

Duh!  The magnificent crescendo of colors, of course.  God, the Master Artiste, embellishes the countryside with glorious hues of red, yellow, orange, burgundy and brown.

Really?  You had to ask?  Pumpkin patches!  You've got jack-o-lanterns to carve and sheaves of corn stalks to display.

And don't forget apple orchards with wagon rides, cider and donuts.

The primary advantage of apple orchards?

The world's best apple pie, courtesy of Karen.  Truly a seasonal delight I crush on all year long.

Leave us not forget everyone's fave (autumn) holiday, All Hallows E'en.

Its shady origins aside, this is a great opportunity to share the truth of God's love with lots of smiling children (and their parents) as they come to your door and happily accept whatever you give them.

Why not include a gospel tract along with that candy?

You might just change someone's life for good...forever.

Lessee...did I forget something?

Not a chance, just saved the best for last:

Fall Golf.

Nothing beats a crisp early morning stroll through the countryside festooned with autumnal glory, chasing that little white ball from tee to pin with your hickories.

Truly, I could live year 'round in September, but alas!

'Tis but a single month, here and gone too soon.

Embrace it while you can.

It will reward you with beautiful vistas, delicious food and cherished memories for the rest of your life.

yep, we're jumping the gun a bit

Speaking of hickory golf...

...that's my current playset: l to r, 20* long spoon, lofting iron, putter.

Humble, I know, but over the course of this so-so season, those have become my 3 best clubs.

For now, if I carry another one, it will only be for backup in case my long spoon breaks.

I've tried other long nose woods from the tees this season...been switching out clubs from 12* to 16*, but I don't hit any of those as consistently - or as far - as the one above.

So I figure why waste the round constantly scrambling, trying to salvage mediocre drives?

Last week was another push - won Monday, lost Thursday - we'll see if zeroing in on just the clubs I hit best makes a difference.

If nothing else, it cuts down on time trying to decide which club to use for each shot.

More to come...

My lawyers maintain insanity is a winning defense, so I say let's roll the dice and 23 Skidoo:

they never smile for the camera, probably bc they feel guilty eating the birds' food (enlarge the pic and look closely at his nose)

we're getting an early start on our fall decorating...

... both outside...

...and in.  Love that orange owl from hobby lobby.

we're nice people and all, but seems like he's just a wee bit too relaxed

right behind this beautiful garden in our courtyard...

...was a BIG nest of yellowjackets.  sorry boys, but I'm allergic.

just because I like it

In December of 1973 "The Exorcist" premiered, but didn't make its way to Maine - where I was a junior in high school - until 1974.

A group of my classmates decided to go see it and urged me to join them.

I flatly refused.

"Why?" they taunted.  "Are you chicken?"

I had to think about that.

I wasn't raised in a Christian home, and didn't come to know Christ until the early 80's.

In 1974, everything I knew about Christianity, demonic possession and the occult would fit comfortably on the head of a pin.

So I knew nothing of God's explicit warnings in His Word about the dangers and consequences of the occult:

³¹ Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.

    - Leviticus 19:31

¹⁰ There shall not be found among you anyone that maketh his son or daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,

¹¹ Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.

¹² For all that do these things are an abomination to the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

    - Deuteronomy 18:10-12

¹⁸ Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.

    - Exodus 22:18

¹² For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

    - Ephesians 6:12

Back in 1974, the only thing my 17 year old self knew was I didn't want to see it; it just felt wrong somehow.

Ironically, the Special Effects Director - Marcel Vercoutere, who won a Saturn Award for Best Special FX - felt the same way.

He was quoted as saying, "I felt I was playing around with something I shouldn't be playing around with".

The production of the movie was plagued with many problems, injuries and even deaths among cast, crew and family members; the 85 days allowed for filming ballooned to 200, and production costs tripled the original budget.

Audience reactions were extreme - one reviewer reported access to bathroom sinks was blocked by all the vomit.

In spite of this, my classmates went ahead with their plan to see the movie.

The result?

The ones who actually watched the movie - several of them got up and left - told me privately they wished they hadn't.

One of them confided he now kept his bedroom light on all night.

They got no "I told ya so"s from me; I felt sorry for them, but really, what did they expect?

No sane person would drink motor oil; it's poison and will kill your body.

You think poisoning your brain by what you watch and listen to won't kill your mind?

That was more than 50 years ago, and I suppose by today's standards The Exorcist is considered light fare.

That's a very sad commentary on the downward spiral of our society.

The Apostle Paul wrote these words in his epistle to the Philippians:

Finally brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

    - Philippians 4:8

Got that?

Fill your mind with whatever is true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous, and praiseworthy.

Why?

Next verse:    ...the God of peace will be with you.

Bet my classmates would have preferred that to their nightmares.

Only Because I Have To...

...here's the most accurate
...and most popular summary of Commie Mamdani's takeover of the world's financial epicenter.

As much as I'd love to skip the politics, you just can't ignore an earthquake.

Think of it...a 34 year old anti-semite from Uganda who's never held a real job in his life and with no relevant experience was just elected mayor of one of the world's most populous and important cities.

Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Chief cheerleaders in the Commie's large group of stupid people are a couple of similarly unqualified Mensa rejects:

AOC...

according to this famed meteorologist, we only have 6 years left before <the end of the world>; she hopes to spend them in a socialist utopia.

...and nursing home escapee Bernie Sanders:

according to Larry David, Bernie only has one pair of underwear

Defying both logic and the imagination, this perfectly illustrates the danger of granting idiots the right to vote.

It is exactly as the old saw opines: people who don't know history are doomed to repeat it.

And history is littered with examples of failed socialist countries: the USSR, Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea.

Soon we'll be able to add New York City to the growing list of economies sacrificed on the altar of socialist ideology.

The Post sold out immediately, and sellers put up signs saying "No NY Post Papers" in their storefront windows to stem the steady stream of frustrated searchers.

You can still get them on ebay, however:

...proof that in spite of the communist takeover of New York, capitalism is still alive and well.

For now, anyway.

Thanks to brain dead New Yorkers sealing their doom through exuberant youthful nescience, business is booming...elsewhere, that is:

Real estate brokers in Florida, Texas and Tennessee report being swamped with inquiries from panicked New Yorkers.

Consequently, Florida governor Ron DeSantis says they're going to build a wall to keep out incognizant liberals fleeing the predictable results of their lifelong political choices.

Governor Abbott of Texas says they'll slap NY refugees with 100% tariffs.

Governor Bill Lee from Tennessee adopted a <more welcoming stance>, reminding desperate New Yorkers that Tennessee is "open for business".

They're all in agreement, however...if you come to our state, check your liberal politics at the door.

You can pick them up on your way out if you leave, but don't bring your callow political claptrap with you.

It's time to rewrite Sinatra's signature song:

"I want to get away from it, New York, New York!"

Recently had new tile installed in our master bathroom by #4 son and one of my grandsons.

It went from this:

To this:

The best part is not just the new tile, though we love the look...rather it's that the floor is now heated.

Karen is thrilled since it was always freezing in the winter, and no wonder: turns out the old tile was installed directly on a cement slab...no backer board or anything beneath it...just cold, hard cement.

It's toasty now, and just before the snow flies.

Here's to Chris and Isaac who did a great job...

...thank you, gentlemen!

We have this little sign in our coffee nook:

And the sign says true:

...which leads us to the less popular 2nd verse of that little ditty:

"Every hour waking
Will now be spent raking!"

And so we did yesterday...got out the mower and mulched the backyard, then manned the rakes and cleaned up the front:

That's all well and good, but for all the work we did - and I've got the aching back to prove it - here's the problem:

Considering the overall task, we barely made a dent.  Most of the leaves will come down in the 2nd half of November.

But my greens are looking pretty good today...

Think I'll bundle up - it's 33
° this morning - forget about what's still ahead...

...and walk a round or three on Ryan's Hickory Golf Course.

On Halloween, one of our trick-or-treaters greeted us with "Merry Christmas!"

His dad looked at us and shrugged, then told his son, "You mean 'trick or treat', right?"

I joined in with, "Don't rush it!  Thanksgiving is next."

"Nope," the little costumed rebel insisted, "Merry Christmas!"

And that's pretty much the prevailing attitude, isn't it?

Thanksgiving is little more than a speed bump on the holiday highway, a brief pit stop between Halloween and Christmas.

Given the strident political atmosphere of the last few years, you can almost understand people's desire to just skip it.

Who wants to risk a big family get together tinged with the threat of nasty ideological conflict?

I know I'd welcome Karen's TDS riddled brothers with the same enthusiasm I have for an abscessed tooth or a bout of the puking flu.

Their sickness is so advanced, they actually believe CNNLOL and MSDNC are news outlets and not just soviet style apparatchiks of the democrat party.

But putting the potential for a strife of tongues aside, it's worth remembering God calls us to be truly thankful:

"15  And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful."

    - Colossians 3:15

"16  Rejoice evermore.

"17  Pray without ceasing.

"18  In everything give thanks:  for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."

    - I Thessalonians 5:16-18

Whether your upcoming Thanksgiving holiday promises to be peace and joy or political pistols at 20 paces, take time and give thanks to God in heaven "...who daily loadeth us with benefits" (Psalm 68:19).

Can Hardly Believe...

...it's been 20 years already...not sure where the time went, or how it passed so quickly.

But I do know I'm incredibly blessed to have spent the last 20 years with my lovely wife.

wedding day, 2005

And of course, she feels exactly the same about me, right my darling kumquat?

I said, right?

Sweetheart?

Yes...well, she's probably busy counting her many matrimonial blessings, so we can come back to that later.

How did we celebrate?

By returning to the scene of the crime:

The shores of Lake Michigan in the Douglas / Saugatuck area where we honeymooned.

It was a beautiful day, <muy agradable> with just a touch of melancholy, casting back to those times when our love was new and the vigor of youth still throbbed in our veins.

I'm very thankful to have spent these years with the love of my life, and am reminded of God's description of The Virtuous Woman:

"10  Who can find a virtuous woman?  for her price is far above rubies.

"11  The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

"12  She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life...

"...28  Her children arise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

"29  Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

"30  Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain:  but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised."

    - Proverbs 31

Such great memories we've shared, and we're busy making more for the next 20 years.

So what do you think...is TDS* real or not?

My vote is it's so real it's actually dangerous, not just to the half-wits who have it, but also to those around them.

Case in point:

In 2017 Tylenol posted this on line.

Why do we care about this?

Recently the Trump White House, in conjunction with HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Dr. Mehmet Oz, <advised against taking Tylenol during pregnancy> due to an increased risk of autism.

Get that?  They didn't say "if you take tylenol while pregnant your baby will have autism".

They advised against taking it while pregnant because some studies have shown a possible link between the two.

So what do you suppose the immediate reaction was among the morons with TDS?

You guessed it: <Pregnant Women Taking Tylenol> went viral.

A part of me doesn't care.

Stupidity is God's way of thinning the herd, so yeah...go ahead, take the whole bottle, destroy your liver, sayonara, and the collective IQ of the world just ticked up a notch.

But - and this is the kicker - there's another life involved here, an innocent one who depends on the brain dead idiot carrying them in the womb.

And you would think if there was even a chance - no matter how small - that ingesting acetaminophen (or any other substance) might harm their baby, they would be - if not smart enough, then at least caring enough about their unborn child - to NOT take it until AFTER they're born.

But no...this is their "wonder of me!" viral moment in the spotlight when they get to prove to the world:

Trump doesn't tell ME what to do!

Imagine the videos we'd be seeing online if he'd told them not to drop acid and snort cocaine while pregnant.

Lord have mercy on those poor babies.

*TDS - Trump Derangement Syndrome

Had another applicant for this year's "Walk Of Fear", due to open for a one night only engagement on Friday, October 31st.

I don't normally agree to interview applicants in abandoned factories at midnight...

...but he showed some real spirit in his application, and time is running short.

Hoping I'd be able to recognize him from his picture, I crossed all 9 fingers for luck and tallied ho.

The place didn't show any signs of life when I got there, and I was a little on edge when I couldn't find him.

Suddenly he just appeared out nowhere and spooked me.

"Well finally!" I said a little too quickly.

"I was starting to think you were ghosting me."

I could continue but it's all downhill from here with me struggling to fit words like "phantom", "wraith", "visitant" and "specter" into awkward sentences.

Suffice to say he and his pumpkin friends are still in the haunt for the job.

Howzabouts we HGU*, pic captions only, just for fun.

teeing off for the last time this year, at least on this course.  the drought was so bad they're shutting it down to overseed and repair.

birdie putt on 2 that morphed into a par

ditto on 5

"I think I'll chip in for birdie," sez I to myself on 7, just before I foozled it into a bogey

birdie putt on the par 5 8th hole that miraculously became an actual birdie

Remaining rounds this year will be with featheries on a local par 3 course which I'll play as par 4's.

More to come...but not too much more...

23 Skidoo, y'all...

Photographic evidence cats come when called:

"for cryin' out loud, the things I do for my subordinates.  there better be a big dish of food waiting for me that I can sniff and ignore."

ditto

"These are troubled times" is something that has been said all throughout history.

Pick any era you wish and it's guaranteed to have been punctuated by violence, corruption, greed, war.

We're fallen sinners (Romans 3:23); it's what we do.

So it's easy to get discouraged, but that's a mistake.

Instead of giving in to despair and panic, we should take comfort that God is in control of all things:

"10  Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

"11  The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.  Selah."
