Reunited...

...and it feels so good...but to be accurate I should drop the "Re".

This is actually the first time I've laid eyes on our beautiful 1956 Philco V-handle refrigerator.

I bought it on ebay in June of last year then had it shipped directly to The Retro Revival so Mandy and Co. could work on it.

This is what it looked like when Mandy got it:

Nine months of restorative labor have given (re)birth to this glorious vintage appliance.

And it arrived on St. Patrick's Day no less...

In case you've forgotten, here's the big yank about these refrigerators:

You can open them...

...from either side.

How cool is that?

It's part of what makes them the "holy grail" of vintage mid century modern refrigerators.

Mandy and company did an outstanding job of restoring this one to "like new" condition...couldn't be happier with their work.

Karen says the sparkle and shine makes it look like a piece of jewelry.

Reminds me of a classic vintage car with all the chrome trim and the V handle as the hood ornament.

But that's how it was back in the day.

There was a greater appreciation of both form and function, the melding of the pretty and the practical, than there is today.

Like Detroit used to do...

1956 Ford T-bird

...before it lost its mojo and was reduced to churning out monotonous variations of the egg car...

...so, too, other manufacturers valued both craftsmanship and style back then.

You saw it in radios...

1930's Colonial Globe Radio

...televisions...

Philco Predicta Barberpole

...furniture...

Noguchi Sofa

...and houses...

Eichler Ranch

...as well as kitchen appliances like refrigerators.

They weren't just big rectangles that kept food cold; they were designed for eye appeal, a quality piece of furniture that graced your kitchen.

Contrast that with the massive Giganta-fridge that was here when we bought this home:

If big, bland and industrial is your style, have we got the fridge for  you.

It definitely did the job, but it’s not our taste; so we emptied Big Bertha, unplugged her, removed the water line and slowly, laboriously muscled her out of the room.

(She's too big to fit through any of our doorways, so we still have to remove all three fridge doors to get her outside.)

After that ordeal, sliding Phil into his rightful place as King of the Mid Century Modern Kitchen....

...was a piece of cake.

We then stocked him with food and drink taken from the Giganta-fridge...

...and Voila!

I won't show you the pics of all the food that wouldn't fit, but as Karen noted, it's not just a vintage refrigerator, it's a lifestyle commitment.

We observe that all those folks in the 50's and 60's managed to survive and thrive with their smaller capacity refrigerators...

...pretty sure we can, too.

Have you seen the official mascot for the month of March?

That just about sums it up.

March has pretty much cornered the market on dark and dreary.

For example, did you know on this day in 1345 - according to the academic elite at the University of Paris - the Black Death was created?

Quoting those learned scholars, it was "...a triple conjunction of Saturn, Jupiter and Mars in the 40th degree of Aquarius" that done did the dirty deed.

And what a dirty deed ’twas done, as "The Plague" swept across the Middle East and Eurasia killing 25 million people - a third of the population - by the end of the century.

But take heart...it's not all bad news in March.

Here in 2021, we've finally crawled, staggered and stumbled our way to The Big Day...

Welcome, Spring!

It is with great sorrow I adduce we have once again raced to the terminus of another thrillin' edition of the Atomic Monster Cafe.

I want to be here...

We trust you found your abbreviated journey both stimulating and rewarding on several levels.

If not, don't blame us.

We're about as deeply rewarding and uber stimulating as you can legally be.

If we tried to cram any more of either category into this blog we'd have to apply for a special use permit.

But don't take our word for it...no, wait...on 2nd thought, go ahead and take our word for it.

Winter Makes...

...its whole-hearted return...and guess who showed up for dinner?

It's been awhile, but they're baaaaack...so we're putting corn out for them again.

And like last time, the snow is very pretty...

lowered the flag due to 40mph winds

the night before...

...the morning after

Temps are due to drop into single digits over the next week so they're expecting the lake effect snow machine to kick into high gear.

With all the balmy weather I figured it was the perfect time to take Mr. T for a spin...

...which was actually quite a bit of fun.

Cold and snow are not a Model T's best friend, but we kept it between the ditches and arrived only half, not completely frozen.

Next time I'll put some skis on him.

In the Mid Century Modern Appliances department, more good news from Mandy at The Retro Revival re: our Philco V-handle refrigerator...new wiring, freezer and breakers installed...

...ready for re-assembly next week, and hopefully in our my grubby little mitts by the end of the month (Karen objected to me referring to her mitts as grubby).

Next up may be a vintage Kitchenaid dishwasher...

...our 2017 GE dishwasher died and it's more than I want to spend to fix it...would rather take another step toward making our kitchen appliances match our mid century modern home.

Someone had a birthday this past week...

the Barbie Twins

...and I'm not allowed to say who, but here's a hint...it's the beautiful woman on the right.

We had a big ol' shindig...

{ shindig shÄn′dÄg″

  • n.
A festive party, often with dancing.
  • n.
    A ball or dance; especially, a dance attended with much uproar and rowdyism. }

...during which time we did excitin' stuff like drink coffee, eat cake and watch our latest binge...

...a BBC presentation that extends Jane Austen's unfinished novel over 8 episodes...pretty good, too...worth a look.

A stroll through the parting shots department from some antique shops we visited on Karen's birthday...

a nice welcome

the Corona from 1912 is pretty cool

aww, thanks

In spite of the cold and snow, take heart...only 43 days 'til Spring...and you know what that means...

Can't wait...

Just 7 More Days...

...and all through the land...people clamored to know, "O, when will it end?!"

"The answer's contained in the statement, my dear,

"Just 7 more days 'til Christmas is here!"

So hurry and watch those shows on TV!
The halls all need decking, and so does the tree!

But somewhere amidst all the sparkle and shine,
The tumult and chaos that's stealing your time,

Take a moment or two for calm meditation;
Remember the Reason for this celebration.

The lights and the glitter are all well and good,
The ornaments, presents, songs and the food...

But when you consider the Grand Scheme of things,
They're really just heralds for our Newborn King.

So sing and be merry with those that you love,
But never forget God's gift from above.

With shepherds and Angels we echo it still,
"Glory to God, peace on earth and good will."

As you may have surmised, this past week we did in fact continue watching our traditional Christmas movies and shows...

...along with some of the Hallmark variety...and while those can lend new meaning to the word "obvious", they do typically deliver a consistent couple of hours of light entertainment.

With challenging problems like finding someone to play Santa in the town Santa parade or convincing 10 year old Muffy that Santa really is real - no, really!   He's real! - you're not going to achieve the 4th level of Arhat...

...but if you're not too picky you will see a couple of attractive people - who live in attractive surroundings with attractive friends, have attractive jobs and occupy attractive homes - become attracted to each other, then un-attracted to each other, then finally attracted to each other again - no, I mean for good this time - at which point they'll cue the swelling music as our attractive heroes share an attractive kiss, annnnnnnd - cut!

I dare ya...no, I ding dang diggety dong double dog dare ya...

Hey, I actually enjoy some of the Hallmark movies, especially in these depressing times...it's nice to unplug for a couple of hours and escape.

So go ahead...take a flyer and watch a few...

In the happy news department, Mandy from The Retro Revival sent me some pics of our Philco V-handle’s reattached  V-handle, to wit:

It's the most complicated door mechanism of its era, and Mandy reported it was a real treat getting it installed again.

Thankfully they did so successfully and the re-assembly process of our baby continues.

As I'm sure you know, the big yank about these refrigerators is they open from both the left and the right side depending upon which end of the V handle you press.

And while the exact same refrigerator was marketed under a different model number with a regular handle, it's the iconic V handle that makes it the holy grail for us mid century modern enthusiasts.

Très cool, oui?

Before you race out the back door to fight the crowds at the mall...
Christmas at the mall, covid style

...and complete your Christmas shopping, we should take a leisurely stroll through the parting shots department...

For those of you who still care about the state of our constitutional republic, I have to admit things are looking grim.

Short of a miracle, it's starting to appear that a corrupt imbecile and his communist running mate - neither of whom could draw a crowd in the subway at rush hour - will have cheated their way into the highest offices in the land.

The people - and I mean all of us on both sides of the political spectrum - will henceforth have no say in who our "elected" (wink wink nudge nudge) leaders are.

Barring implementation of martial law and the Insurrection Act, we're headed for one party rule and the end of the republic as founded 244 years ago.

It was a good run, I guess.

For those who don't really care and are just glad "they won": you lost.  We all did.  That truth will become sadly, maybe even violently evident in the days ahead.  (helpful hint: start learning Mandarin.)

For those who have faith in the God of the universe, take heart: He's still in control and will still care for His people.  He always has, no matter the fiery trials He's allowed through the centuries.

There could be some of those in our not too distant future.

But for now - it’s Christmas time...

...and we should do our best to lay aside our cares and concerns and celebrate a truly Joyeux Noel!
